A pole in an office and a bunch of pictures.
Yeah, tell me that title didn’t grab your attention! So as I have mentioned in previous posts; I have been commuting about 4 hours a day (total) to and from work due to my job relocating. After several weeks of commuting I noticed my boss spending longer and longer days at work. I mentioned to him that he should get a cot so he wouldn’t need to commute since he was in his office for longer than normal hours and he was driving about the same distance as I am. He jokingly replied that he would prefer a hammock. After discussing briefly that his office lacked the requisite second pole for a hammock I decided that this is something that must be installed.
I located the “official” building maintence form and modified it to suit the needs of this prank. Next I enrolled the assistance of my other boss (cough, Office Space, cough) to have both of my bosses boss sign off on it to make it even more authentic. That was about a month ago that the paperwork was placed on my bosses desk which he of course found amusing and proudly hung it on his office wall.
So on to the most important part of this little office prank. Pole making. Keep in mind when planning an office prank that you 1. must set it up properly for maximum amusement and 2. make sure no one could get hurt in the process as to avoid termination, injuries etc. etc.
After talking it over a bit with my 2nd boss I decided that a pole made out of foam insulation board of the 3/4″ variety would be best because it is cheap, easy to work with and wouldn’t injure anyone if it fell over.
1. I used my handy trim straightedge to mark 4 3″ wide 6′ long strips of foam.
2. Next I cut and broke the strips.
3. Glued them together using hot glue.
4. Main portion of the pole glued together.
5. Here I am cutting the edges to make them smooth and even.
6. My office building has 9+ foot ceilings so I had to make an outer box to fit around the main portion. This allowed me to easily transport it in my car and then slide the center up to the ceiling once in my bosses office. Here I am tracing the 4 outer sides which I then cut.
7. It makes a little more sense as it goes, here is the outer glued together.
8. Testing for fit to make sure it will funtion as anticipated.
9. Paint it up all nice.
10. Here it is installed in my bosses office.
11. A view of the newly installed pole form cubicleland.
Finally that next Monday my coworkers and I rigged up a hammock. Using some fish net purchased from a liquidator we cut it to length, tied a knot at each end and tied it to the poles. Note: The feux pole required extra support for the weight so we used some heavy fishline to tie it to the wall.
This brings up another good point, the humor behind the O.P. is appreciated more by the recipient when more people are involved in its undertaking.
It’s not the nicest picture due to being taken with my camera phone but you get the idea.
