Update this!
Sunday, July 29th, 2007In the past I had dabbled in Linux on and off at home and work. The usual live cd’s, servers and what not; but I had never fully weaned myself from Windows completely for my personal use. It’s not that I didn’t want to but it always seemed there were those few programs I Had to have that there wasn’t a viable alternative for in Linux. So, finally on Friday after having months of updates in Windows and those nagging windows updates popping up I decided what better time. That and with MS dropping support next year for 2k and XP in an attempt to force it’s users to move to the hardware hungry Vista why wait. I decided to go with Ubuntu mainly because it is built on Debian, has fantastic package management (easy to install software) and the community support forums are very active for any issues one may encounter. Everything but my wireless nic went flawless which I had half anticipated. I was getting quite frustrated because no matter how I seemed to configure it I couldn’t connect to my home router. After going through a handful of help forum tutorials I finally came across the one that worked immediately. Now I have downloaded a bunch of fantastic open source apps, and am typing to you on my laptop from my happy installation of Linux. I have to say that my cooling fan has not kicked into overdrive once since my install was completed. An all too regular event when I was on Windows. Now it is how a laptop should be-silent.
